But these rules are too often implemented only half-heartedly or not at all by the member states or in the regions. This creates risks for our health, nature conservation and the environment. Many of these problems have long been known, but little has been done so far. A new analysis now shows that the number of infringement proceedings initiated by the European Commission has been falling dramatically for years. Member States are increasingly less often held accountable for failing to implement EU law.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, in the framework of its new Green Deal, the European Commission is talking about a &#8220;zero tolerance&#8221; policy towards member states that fail to implement EU law. The Commission announced that it finally wants to take a tougher stance. Is there any sign of this yet? How can the implementation of EU law be accelerated and improved? And where are the biggest gaps in the implementation of EU environmental law that need to be closed immediately? We will discuss these and many other questions on<\/p>\n<p><b>Wednesday, 3 February 2021, from 5pm to 6:30pm CET<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I am particularly happy to welcome three high-level guests to provide insight and discuss with us:<\/p>\n<p><b>Professor Daniel Kelemen<\/b> of <b>Rutgers University<\/b>, USA, is currently working on a research project on how the European Commission&#8217;s use of the infringement procedure has evolved. His highly exciting work very clearly reveals deficiencies in the enforcement of EU law.<\/p>\n<p><b>Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea<\/b>, <b>Director in the European Commission <\/b>responsible for the implementation of EU environmental law, will give us insights into the Commission&#8217;s work as &#8220;guardian of the treaties&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ana\u00efs Berthier<\/b> leads the work on strengthening the rule of law at the environmental organization <b>ClientEarth <\/b>as their Head of EU Affairs.
