Germany for exiting nuclear power? Italy for banning oil drilling in the Adriatic? This nightmare is already a reality, thanks to an obscure international agreement: the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT).<\/p>\n<p>Because of this treaty, many of our green plans, such as stopping Nord Stream II, could lead to massive and costly litigation in arbitration tribunals. Companies have already been able to sue for over $51 billion in taxpayers&#8217; money with the help of the ECT, and more cases are ongoing! The ECT locks us into dirty energies and slows down the energy transition.<\/p>\n<p>The good news? One million people across Europe have already signed a petition calling on the EU and member states to withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty. Meanwhile, the European Commission is leading a push to reform the Treaty, without much success.<\/p>\n<p>Exiting the Treaty is part of the German Greens&#8217; election manifesto and is also the position of our Greens\/EFA group in the European Parliament. But what are the necessary steps for an exit? How can we mitigate the damage done by the ECT? Is the treaty reformable after all? What other treaties using dangerous investment protections do we need to get rid of to prevent destructive climate and environmental lawsuits?
