Merkel/Draghi meeting: German federal government must commit itself to European fiscal policy

Today Angela Merkel will meet ECB President Mario Draghi in Berlin. For years Draghi has promoted a common fiscal and economic policy in the Eurogroup and among the heads of state and government of the eurozone. The spokesperson for Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in the European Parliament, Sven Giegold, said:

“Merkel should finally commit herself to a European fiscal policy. For years Draghi and his ECB had to play the sweeper for the German federal government. Draghi ironed out Germany’s failings in European policy and was exposed anti-Italian resentments in return. Germany is still refusing a truly common fiscal policy. We need a common corporate taxation and a eurozone budget that invests and stabilises. Also because of the German federal government blocking many reforms in the eurozone, the ECB cannot put an end to its low-interest rate policy. It was never fair that Draghi had to serve as the scapegoat for Germany’s failures. CDU/CSU politicians, in particular, have often ran riot when criticising Draghi. We have to be grateful to Draghi for preventing the Eurozone falling apart during the crisis.”
