On the 21st of December 2016 Jean-Claude Juncker has appointed Günther Oettinger Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources. He has decided not to wait for the hearing in the Parliament which is scheduled for Monday, 9th of January at 6 pm. Oettinger has taken office on the 1st of January 2017, widely unnoticed by the public.
Sven Giegold, spokesperson of the delegation of German Greens comments:
“This provocation will turn into an own goal. The decision of Juncker not even to wait for the hearing is an unacceptable demonstration of power towards the Parliament. The budget portfolio is critical to core rights of the parliament. Oettinger’s promotion is a slap in the face of all parliamentarians who have serious concerns and questions for the hearing on Monday.
Juncker does not breach the rules for the nomination of Commissioners. But, his decision is a blatant violation of the principle of good cooperation between the institutions and a heavy burden for Oettinger. The heat is on before the hearing.”
