On the anniversary of the death of Daphne Caruana Galizia

Tomorrow, exactly one year ago, on 16 October 2017, a car bomb killed blogger and investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia on Malta. Until just before her death she had reported on corruption and money laundering taking place in Malta, with the tolerance of both the ruling Social Democrats and the opposition Christian Democrats.

Tomorrow’s tragic anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s death is commented by MEP Sven Giegold, financial and economic policy spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group commented:

„Daphne Caruana Galizia paid the ultimate price for her fearless reporting into corruption and organised crime in Malta, which reached right to the very top of the island’s elite. It is a stain on Malta that the people who organised her assassination have still not been caught. It is shameful that Daphne Caruana Galizia’s name and reputation are still being dragged through the mud in Malta. The libel cases against Daphne must finally be withdrawn.

„All revelations by the Daphne Project consortium of journalists, covering her unfinished work, must be followed up by official investigations. Malta must turn away from being a money laundering paradise into a state with fully functioning rule of law.  It is intolerable that Minister Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, are still in office, even though strong evidence of corruption has been officially established and even published.

„Antonio Tajani, the President of the European Parliament, must create a Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for investigative journalists. It is overdue to realize this call by the Parliament’s plenary voted on the demand of the Greens/EFA group. Those who make public what governments want to sweep under the rug deserve applause, recognition and protection.“

The European Federation of Journalists invites you to a vigil on Tuesday, 16 October, 12 noon, at the International Press Centre, Residence Palace, Rue de la Loi 155, 1040 Brussels.
