Declaration of the German Greens after death threats against the Serbian Greens

Berlin, 6 December 2025
We are appalled by the death threats, harassment and intimidation directed at Member of Parliament Biljana Đorđević that occurred outside the Serbian National Assembly in the centre of Belgrade. Few days the Green MP Bogdan Radovanovic was physically attacked while observing local elections. This particularly grave incident is the latest escalation in a series of attacks against opposition MPs, independent journalists and civil society groups in Serbia. We strongly condemn all these incidents of violence and aggression. They must be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators must be held to account. Threats and attacks on Greens in Serbia are an attack on all Greens in Europe.

We firmly stand with Biljana Đorđević and in full solidarity with all those in Serbia who stand up for the rule of law, Europe, democracy, freedom of expression and the right to free and fair elections.

Members of Parliament must be able to carry out their work in parliament. For months, the illegal encampment known as “Ćaciland” in front of the National Assembly has been blocking access to parliament. Backed by Aleksandar Vučić’s regime, members of the camp routinely intimidate, harass and physically attack MPs, students, members of the public, journalists and activists. We strongly condemn these attacks targeting the heart of democracy in Serbia.

It is the duty of the Serbian government to safeguard the right of the members of parliament to carry out their work and to safeguard every citizen who stands up for democracy.

We deeply regret to see that Serbia has lost momentum in its reform process on the path to European Union membership. The accession process can only continue if the country takes a fundamental shift and ensures full compliance with rule of law criteria.
