Death of Maltese journalist: Such incidents bring to mind Putin’s Russia, not the European Union

The Maltese press is reporting that the prominent journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia has died in an explosion in a car in Bidnija. The prime minister of Malta has confirmed that it was an attack on her. Please see below a response from Greens/EFA MEP Sven Giegold, Green coordinator on the Parliament’s inquiry committee on money laundering and tax evasion (PANA):

I am shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Daphne played a vitally important role in unearthing serious allegations of money laundering and corruption in Malta, including those involving senior figures in the Maltese government. It is too early to know the cause of the explosion but we will expect to see a thorough investigation. Such incidents bring to mind Putin’s Russia, not the European Union. There can be absolutely no tolerance for violence towards the press and freedom of expression in the European Union.
