European Commission nominates Elke König for Chair of the Single Resolution Board (SRB)

The European Commission has proposed Elke König, head of the German Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) for the post of chair of the Single Resolution Board (SRB). Furthermore, the Commission has adopted proposals for the appointment of the Vice-Chair and the other Board Members of the Single Resolution Board. This decision was preceeded by an informal hearing of these and other candidates with the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) of the European Parliament. As the next step, European Parliament and Council have to nominate each of those candidates.

The formal hearings with those candidates will take place as follows:

  • for the chair on Monday, December 8th, 5 – 6.30pm
  • for all other members on Tuesday, December 9th, 9am – 12.30pm
  • the vote in the ECON committee on Monday, December 15th
  • the secret plenary vote in the European Parliament on December 16th or 17th

All hearings will be broadcasted via internet and simultaneous translation will be provided.

Reacting to the Commission´s proposals, Green finance spokesperson and Green shadow rapporteur on SRM/SRB Sven Giegold stated:

“I am glad that the European Commission broadly followed the informal proposals of the European Parliament and I congratulate Ms König on her nomination.

All candidates shall now face up to public hearings in the European Parliament. This procedure clearly reveals: More Europe in banking supervision goes hand in hand with more democracy. In comparison, the most national parliaments had not been granted equally strong rights in the appointment for the top posts of the their Financial Supervisory Authority.”
