European strategy of the German Greens

Dear friends and interested parties,

As German Greens, we have set ourselves the goal of being the most European opposition party that Berlin has ever seen. In order to live up to this claim, we as the federal executive committee have adopted an ambitious European strategy. After my election, I coordinated a broad process involving many people in the party who are active in European affairs. A strong focus on Europe is urgently needed: in view of escalating global crises, Europe is more important now than ever before.

A united Europe based on the European treaties is the guarantor of our freedoms and our civil rights. At the same time, European unity is threatened from within – by a lack of ambition in European policy, a lack of medium-term strategic capability among political actors, and unstable national governments that are themselves under the influence of anti-European, mostly right-wing populist forces.

As German Greens, we are part of a European family of parties and have always stood up for a strong Europe. Our new European strategy now sets out the specific structural, political and organisational steps needed to further develop our work in Europe. The most important steps include:

  • Strengthening our European agenda with regular, bold pro-decisions by the federal executive committee and the federal party.
  • Proactive and critical monitoring of the activities of the Federal Government in the Council of the EU by the Bundestag parliamentary group and the federal party.
  • Documenting cooperation in the European Parliament between the Union, the Left and, where applicable, other pro-European parties with the opponents of Europe and the anti-European positioning of the AfD on a dedicated website.
  • Strengthening and expanding cooperation with the European Green Party (EGP) and the active participation of German Greens.
  • Strengthening the involvement and internal visibility of the German delegation in the European Parliament
  • Reactivating and strengthening the existing network of European representatives in our district associations, state associations and LAGs/BAGs.
  • Our strategy covers the entire spectrum of Green European policy – from the European Green Party (EGP) to the LAGs and BAGs to those responsible for European affairs in district and state associations.

Implementation has long since begun, including through numerous speeches on European policy issues and pointed remarks by our leaders in the Bundestag, as well as public interventions by our two party leaders.

As coordinator for Europe and international affairs, I am responsible for implementing the European strategy on the federal executive committee. If you have any feedback or questions about the new European strategy, please feel free to contact me in person or by email.

With European regards,
Sven Giegold
