World Social Forum in Tunis

Dear friends,

From 26 until 31 March, I will attend the World Social Forum in Tunis, Tunisia. The first World Social Forum took place in 2001. It is designed to create a platform for the exchange of ideas between people from all over the world. The program offers a huge diversity of topics and covers issues from women’s rights and youth participation to employment, education, environment and North-South-relations.

The Greens will be focusing on future energy supply and the role of the European parliament in contributing to peace building in North Africa and Sahel. Also, we will show that there have already been Green answers to the contradictory EU migration policy, unlimited market liberalization and austerity policies in the global crisis.

I especially look forward to our planned workshops: Together with the Heinrich-Boell Foundation, we invite you to a workshop on « Which kind of energy supply does a developing democracy need? Which kind of democracy does a good energy supply need? » on 29 March from 9:30 am to 1 pm in Hotel Belvédère, 10 Avenue des Etats Unis d’Amérique. Also, the Greens have prepared a party! It will take place on 28 March, 7 pm, in Hotel Belvédère as well. Moreover, I look forward to meeting many of my friends of Attac. On 28 March, from 4 pm to 6:30 pm in room M211, I will take part in the Attac workshop “Democracy and the power of central banks” and present my view inside from the European Parliament with regard to the European Central Bank (ECB). Moreover, I will participate in the global meeting of parliamentarians. In addition, Jean-Paul Besset and Malika Benarab-Attou will discuss the issue of shale gas in Europe and the Maghreb.

On my blog I will report on the World Social Forum live from Tunis. Here you can find the blog of the Greens / EFA in the European Parliament on which we will also report on the World Social Forum.
