Malta: Sven Giegold will participate the urgent mission of the European Parliament

Already this Tuesday and Wednesday an urgent mission of the European Parliament will visit Malta. According to the draft programme the cross party group of MEPs will speak with the most relevant public institutions, media, NGOs and the family of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The mission takes place in the framework of the Rule of Law Monitoring Group (RoLMG). Sven Giegold will join the group as a substitute for the Green members of the RoLMG. Media may follow the mission but can normally not participate any of the meetings.

MEP Sven Giegold, financial and economic policy spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group commented:

“More than two years ago Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered. Some of the best European investigative journalists have continued her work. Despite of all their revelations not one suspect of relevance has been convicted or indicted at least for a long time. The series of serious crimes in Malta’s financial services sector has been complemented by new episodes. Most importantly prime minister Muscat needs to explain how he wants to stand for the rule of law after he held on to wrongdoing ministers for years. For all these reasons, it is high time that the European Parliament sends a new mission to Malta in order to question the functioning of the rule of law in Malta.

As always I am looking forward to receiving hints, documents and inside information which can help fulfilling the objectives of our mission.“
