Thank you very much for signing. 1906 people have signed my letter to Ursula von der Leyen with you! Today we sent the letter with your signature to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
With this large number of signatures, we are sending a strong signal for the consistent enforcement of EU environmental law. The EU Commission must finally make more staff available for infringement proceedings. Not only to bring the more than 400 current proceedings to a conclusion as quickly as possible, but also to open many more proceedings. All too often, infringements of environmental and nature protection treaties are still being ignored for years.
The EU Commission has announced that it will take its role as guardian of the treaties seriously and prioritise law enforcement. In the European Green Deal, it promised to step up its efforts to enforce the legislation already in place. This ambition is reflected in some of the EU Commission’s other policies. The new EU Chemicals Strategy, for example, speaks of “zero tolerance” in the enforcement of EU law. The EU Biodiversity Strategy also focuses on the full implementation and enforcement of EU law. However, in addition to political support for the consistent enforcement of EU environmental law, financial and human resources are also needed within the EU Commission. We therefore call on Ursula von der Leyen to provide the necessary staff and to speed up procedures.
