The dieselgate scandal is a case of unprecedented corporate crime and government failure. Acting in a deliberately criminal way, car companies and their suppliers caused dramatic harm not only to the customers’ purse, but also to public health. The companies are responsible of at least thousands of premature casualities. In particular, people living or working next to busy streets are affected.
In the meantime, in the German Bundestag as well as in the European Parliament, parliamentary enquiry committees have been established to investigate the dimension and background of the scandal. What did the German Federal Government and the European Commission know beforehand? Who are the instigators of the scandal and which appropriate steps have to be taken through environmental but also criminal law? What do member states and the EU have to do to ensure air pollution control also in major cities?
In order to discuss these issues, I would like to kindly invite you to the next episode of my online discussion series “Europe Calling”. The idea of the “Europe Calling” series is to bring Europe closer to its citizens. The concept is simple but effective: Using a “Webinar” device on your personal computers, hundreds of people can attend discussions on European politics and thus participate in European democracy.

To discuss these questions, I invited Bas Eickhout and Oliver Krischer, the Green Members in charge of the investigation in the parliamentary enquiry committees in the European Parliament and the German Bundestag, as well as Dorothee Saar from the “Deutsche Umwelthilfe”, an environmentalist NGO.
The discussion will be mostly in German, but we will have an in-time interpretation in English in written form.
Everybody is free to take part from one’s home or office via computer, smartphone or good old fixed line. You can ask your questions via an online chat or get directly involved by posing questions and statements via your microphone. The speakers interact with the audience like in a normal room.
