Conference on ecologically and socially sustainable investment – 19 Nov 2015

Link to get the poster for further distribution: Conference Sustainable Investment

Sustainable investment can make a growing contribution to an economy respecting nature, social rights and good governance. In a conference on promoting sustainable investment Greens in the European Parliament want to evaluate how Europe and its member states can boost sustainable investment.

Currently, several initiatives have been launched at EU level that provide opportunities to direct investment towards those parts of our economy that have a sustainable future. Our first panel will therefore provide an overview of current legal reforms and possible economic instruments to boost sustainable investment in Europe. We are pleased that, among others, the Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Steven Maijoor as well as Benoît Lallemand from Finance Watch will participate in this debate.

Some EU member states have already successfully implemented regulation to stimulate sustainable investment. Our second panel will therefore shed light on best practices to promote Green investment. We are glad to discuss this together with Thierry Philipponnat from the European Sustainable Investment Forums (Eurosif), academics and national stakeholders.

The conference will take place on 19 November 2015, 15:00 – 18:00 in the European Parliament in Brussels. If you want to come to the European Parliament, please register: http://gruene.lv/46y
Alternatively, you can follow the conference online: http://gruene.lv/479
Together with my colleagues Karima Delli and Bas Eickhout I am looking forward to a fruitful discussion, please find below the programme of our conference.

Agenda
Panel 1 – Current EU initiatives to promote Green investment | 15:00 – 16:30

Several key EU initiatives provide opportunities to boost green investment. The Capital Markets Union, the revision of the activities and supervision of institutions for occupational retirement provision, the European Fund for Strategic Investment and common rules for defining and marking sustainable investment through the PRIIPs regulation could all contribute to green investment. This panel will provide an overview of current legal reforms and possible economic instruments to boost sustainable investment.
Panel discussion: Steven Maijoor (ESMA); Sven Gentner (European Commission); Benoît Lallemand (Finance Watch); Camilla de Ste Croix (Shareaction).

Panel 2 – Best practices to promote Green investment | 16:45 – 18:00
Sustainable investment markets yearly reach record highs. Investors already have many investment possibilities with environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects. Consequently, more and more money is invested in sustainable parts of the European economy. But obstacles remain in many EU countries. Consumers need comprehensive and comprehensible information, on companies and other investments to identify environmentally and socially responsible investment opportunities in order to improve the conditions for Green investment. Some EU member states have successfully implemented regulation to stimulate sustainable investment and can serve as a model for the rest of the EU.
Panel discussion: Thierry Philipponnat (Eurosif); Timo Busch (University of Hamburg); Christian Klein (University of Kassel); Antje Schneeweiß (SüdWind Institute); Frank Wagemans (VBDO).
