Roberto Gualtieri to become Italy’s Minister of Economy and Finance: Chance for a new era in Italy’s fiscal policy

It has just been announced that Roberto Gualtieri (PD), the current Chairman of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee in the European Parliament, is to become Minister of Economy and Finance of the new Italian government. Gualtieri is not only a convinced European, but also a committed supporter for a deepening of the Eurozone and of European democracy. Together with Gualtieri, I pushed for strong European financial supervision and the European fight against money laundering.

Sven Giegold, spokesperson for Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in the European Parliament, explains:

„I congratulate my long-standing colleague in the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on his appointment as Minister of economy and finance. Gualtieri can contribute to a new era in Italy’s fiscal policy. The euro zone now has a more reliable partner in Italy. With Gualtieri, Germany and Italy can open a new chapter in euro policy. This is the chance of a new beginning between Italy and the rest of the Eurozone. The German Federal Government must not let this opportunity go by. I look forward to a continuation of our good cooperation in the future.“
