Orbán stays in the EPP: A credible pro-European EPP election campaign is now unthinkable

The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Joseph Daul, has announced that Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz Party will remain a member of the EPP until a possible constitutional case against Hungary has been concluded. According to POLITICO, other member parties had demanded the immediate expulsion of Fidesz. MEP Sven Giegold, spokesperson for Greens/Bündnis90 in the European Parliament, commented:

„The decision of the Christian Democrats is a heavy burden for the European election campaign. With Orbàn in one’s own ranks you cannot conduct a credible pro-European election campaign. Manfred Weber would now have a heavy anti-European stone tied to his leg as the top candidate. This election is about the choice between a strong and a weak Europe. When pro-European and anti-European forces campaign together, it only helps the Eurosceptics. The pro-European parties must do everything to ensure that there is no Eurosceptic majority in parliament“.
