Petition: No meeting behind closed doors! Hearing of Zuckerberg in the EU Parliament must be public

Dear friends, dear colleagues,

When it became known that the Christian Democrats and right-wing populists were jointly prepared to meet Mark Zuckerberg behind closed doors, I opened a petition to change.org. I am convinced: The last word has not yet been spoken on this. We can still persuade the Christian Democrats and Zuckerberg to hold a public hearing!

That is why we are petitioning for a public hearing with Mark Zuckerberg. In less than a day, already more than 20,000 people have signed the demand. Please, support the petition, too!

Background:

Europeans cannot tolerate this! The hearing of Mark Zuckerberg in the European Parliament is supposed to take place behind closed doors. A majority of Christian Democrats and right-wing populists decided to accommodate Zuckerberg and conduct the hearing in secret.

It is disgraceful how Zuckerberg promises more transparency, but does not want to make public statements in the European Parliament. Facebook operates a public platform and therefore has to publicly take responsibility for its actions. Like the American citizens, we are entitled to a public hearing of Zuckerberg as well!

We are no second-class Facebook users. Let’s put pressure on the president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani and the Christian Democrats to support a public hearing. The European Parliament can not accept worse conditions for the hearing than the US Congress. In a democracy, the parliament sets the rules, not Facebook.

Please, sign this petition to President Tajani and share it with friends and acquaintances: http://www.change.org/facebook-hearing

We still can convince the Christian Democrats and Zuckerberg of a public hearing!

With hopeful greetings

Sven Giegold, Member of the European Parliament
